The Woodpecker

Before i saw his feathered
red head, i heard the  loud
rat-atty - tat - tat as he
rapped his his pointed
beak against the trunk
of the tree. So intent
on the work he was
doing, he paid no
attention to me, the
Blue Jay squawking,
or the Swallow flying
near by. i was reminded
of Walter Lanz's famous
animated character,Woody -
but recognized right away
this woodpecker was no
silly cartoon figure, but a
beauty of nature, so
lovely to see

  2. Being a native Angeleno as you are, Kathy, I was never really able to appreciate nature in all its splendor. The Angeles National Forest pales in comparison to other wonders of nature. I know you really appreciate your natural surroundings.

When I first heard tap-tap-tapping against a tree and saw a woodpecker for the first time, the first thing that struck me was how gentle and slow was his tapping compared to the rapid, frantic tapping of the Walter Lanz creation. His only purpose for tapping is to spoil the peace and quiet of the insects in the tree so that he might eat, and when he's eaten his fill, he stops.

That's the opinion not of an ornithologist, but of a lover of nature.
