they got a name
for rain, and wind and fire
The rain is Tess, the fire, Joe
and they call the wind Mariah

All through the night, into early morn
sleep eluded me
as a whipping, swishing sound -
the howling of the wind
swirled and twirled through trees;
thrashing, bashing, crashing
against window panes and hardieplank
like the constant roar
of stormy waves pounding
a sandy shore
